How do I select a contractor?
In selecting a heating and air conditioning contractor, ask the following questions:

Do they employ certified, factory-trained technicians?
Rocky Top Air prides itself in hiring only the best employees. These include NATE certified, factory-trained sales and management personnel, as well as technicians. Our technicians are not only factory-trained and NATE certified, but they also receive ongoing training and certifications — a Minimum of 40 hours per year in-house and factory. They use state-of-the-art tools and testing equipment, including Freon recovery equipment to protect the environment.
Are they insured?
Rocky Top Air’s technicians are fully insured, and covered by Workman’s Compensation.
Are they fully licensed to do all of the work themselves?
Rocky Top Air is registered with the State Board of Contractors in Tennessee. We are fully licensed to do complete service and installation throughout the state.
Do they offer emergency service?
Rocky Top Air’s phones are answered 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. We provide every service to all of our customers.
Do they offer maintenance agreements?
Rocky Top Air knows that homeowners have many concerns and activities in their lives. Our mission is to design, install and service heating and cooling systems in a way that provides homeowners with worry-free comfort. The Rocky Top Club has a maintenance agreement that offers, among many other benefits, three complete system tune-ups a year.

Do you service both residential and commercial needs?

What is the average life expectancy of equipment?
Most systems have a lifetime of 11 years or less. As your equipment gets older, its efficiency can decrease dramatically. You may notice that it gets noisier and needs repairs more often. If your system is over five years old, you should have a heating and cooling contractor check your system for maintenance or replacement. In addition, in newer homes, many contractors install the cheapest, bottom-of-the-line units available. This may mean these systems will have an even lower life span. To ensure your system has a long and effective life, schedule regular service and make sure you change filters and other replaceable components regularly.
Should I have my ducts cleaned?
Yes. Mold, mildew, pet hair, smoke film, dander, dust mites, dirt, pollen, and even bacteria make their homes in your air ducts. With each breath you take, you inhale these contaminants. Dirty air ducts can not only make you sick or raise your utility bills, but they can also reduce your air flow and cause premature failure of your expensive heating and cooling system.
Why should I purchase a maintenance agreement?
Just like your car, your air conditioning and heating system needs regular maintenance. Proper care of your equipment can save you real dollars on your utility bills. Some air conditioning and heating problems can double operating costs without reducing comfort. Just 100th of an inch of dirt or film on an evaporator coil can reduce cooling and heating efficiency by 5%. All leading manufacturers recommend regular maintenance to maintain peak performance. A service agreement will give you the piece of mind that your system is operating at optimum efficiency and performance. What is the overall condition of your system?
If your system is in solid condition, it could be wiser to simply repair it. But if your system breaks down often, you should consider replacing it.
What does SEER mean to me?
SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is the measure of efficiency by which the cooling process of air conditioners and heat pumps is rated. A higher the SEER number equals a greater efficiency. This translates into greater energy savings. Today, U.S. regulatory agencies require all new models to have a 14.0 SEER rating or better. Most major manufacturers offer a line of air conditioners and heat pumps that range from 14.0 SEER to 20.0 SEER.
Do you subcontract your installation or do you have your own men?
Rocky Top Air employs highly trained installers. We do not subcontract our installations.
Do you have an office or address where I can reach you?
Rocky Top Air is located at 3821 W Blount Ave, Knoxville, TN 37920. Our phone number is 865-474-1511. You can also check us out at
Do you have a service department staffed with people, or is there just an answering machine?
Rocky Top Air is staffed by actual people and our retail location is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. You should never get a voice mail system. The only time you will reach a voice mail system is if all of our lines are busy at once. This can sometimes happen and when it does, we return your call as quickly as possible.
Are your servicemen trained? Do they wear company uniforms? Do you have your name and other information on your trucks?
Rocky Top Air has fully trained servicemen, in uniform and in trucks marked with our name and logo.
Why should I maintain my A/C system?
Even if your heating & air conditioning system was built to go the distance, it’s got to be maintained in perfect condition, just like your car. A properly maintained system will last longer with fewer breakdowns and save money every month through lower fuel bills. So you haven’t noticed any problems with your heating & air-conditioning system? If you don’t regularly change the oil in your car, you won’t notice problems caused by lack of maintenance until the engine stops running, either. The price of an oil change is much cheaper than the cost of a new engine! The same is true with your heating & air conditioning system.
How often should filters be cleaned or replaced?
Your filters should be inspected each month and replaced when necessary. The more you use your system, the more often you will need to change your filters. A clogged and dirty filter will cost more in efficiency and comfort in the long run than simply checking them once a month.
Why is maintenance so important to my A/C system?
Just like anything with moving parts, your expensive A/C system won’t last forever. But, you can stretch your dollars much further with proper preventative maintenance of your system. After all, it’s much less expensive to have them checked than it is to replace them because proper maintenance wasn’t completed. At Rocky Top Air , we offer a thorough system check of your unit(s) 3 times a year. We offer a comprehensive maintenance agreement that will save you even more money when you pre-pay for Rocky Top Club membership . So, don’t get caught out in the cold (or the heat!).
